In Final Fantasy 9, Vivi serves as your initial glimpse into the enchanting realm of the game. As a Black Mage, he possesses the ability to cast powerful offensive spells during battles. However, what truly sets Vivi apart is that he is a Black Mage brought into existence through the means of Kuja’s technology.

This significant detail adds depth to Vivi’s character, as it delves into the exploration of a central theme in FF9: the concept of a limited lifespan.

Nevertheless, Vivi remains valiant in his efforts to assist his companions, showcasing his altruistic nature. His character has deeply connected with numerous fans throughout the years due to his unwavering virtue and his ability to find value in the brevity of life.

2. Yuna

The character of Yuna and her journey in Final Fantasy 10 are incredibly powerful and emotional. Yuna, as a summoner, embarks on a pilgrimage to obtain the Final Aeon and defeat Sin.

What makes her character truly admirable is her unwavering strength and kindness, as she continues her journey despite knowing that summoning the Final Aeon will result in her own death.

The deep bond she shares with her guardians is also a touching aspect of the game, as their love for each other forms the core of the story.

3. Cloud Strife

When it comes to the best characters in Final Fantasy, Cloud Strife stands out as a highly memorable protagonist. He is easily recognized by his distinct appearance, characterized by his spiky hair and the iconic Buster Sword.

Initially introduced as a First Class Soldier, Cloud’s true identity is gradually revealed throughout the game. As he battles against the threats of Shinra and Sephiroth, Cloud embarks on a journey of self-discovery, ultimately fighting to safeguard the planet.

The Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth delve deeper into Cloud’s character, thanks to the addition of voice acting and enhanced characterization.

These games explore Cloud’s fabricated memories and his identity, as well as his interactions with the other party members.

Cloud is undoubtedly one of the most beloved characters in the whole Final Fantasy series, and this popularity is certainly justified.

4. Sephiroth

When it comes to Final Fantasy, there are numerous characters that could be considered the best. Sephiroth is one of them, and his design alone is enough to make a strong case for his greatness.

With his cool appearance and an incredible theme song like “One-Winged Angel,” it’s no surprise that he has captured the hearts of many fans.

The Final Fantasy team has done an amazing job in developing Sephiroth’s character over the years.

Sephiroth is a complex and tragic character, but it’s hard to sympathize with him considering how he has used his personal tragedies as an excuse for committing unforgivable acts.

5. Auron

In Final Fantasy 10, Auron is introduced as a character shrouded in mystery. He takes on the role of a mentor to Tidus as they venture through the world of Spira. As the story progresses, it is revealed that Auron was once one of Lord Braska’s Guardians.

He chose to aid Tidus and Yuna in accomplishing what he, Braska, and Jecht could not achieve – the ultimate defeat of Sin and Yu Yevon.

In the world of Final Fantasy, Auron stands out as a skilled warrior with a composed and tranquil nature, providing a striking contrast to the youthful and energetic Tidus and Yuna.

Renowned for his remarkable design and level-headedness, Auron is undoubtedly one of the most unforgettable characters in the game.

6. Tifa Lockhart

After her hometown of Nibelheim was destroyed by Sephiroth, Tifa Lockhart relocated to Midgar. There, she crossed paths with the fellow members of Avalanche and took over ownership of the popular establishment known as Seventh Heaven.

Tifa utilizes her extensive martial arts skills to combat the influence and control of the Shinra corporation. Her deep-seated bitterness towards the company stems from the devastation they caused to Nibelheim.

The best characters in Final Fantasy are the ones who stand out with their unique qualities and Tifa is one of them. Known for her compassionate nature, Tifa holds a special place in her heart for her dear friends, particularly Cloud, whom she has known since childhood in the town of Nibelheim.

In the Remake games, Tifa’s character has been further developed, granting her additional opportunities to showcase her strengths. One of the coolest aspects about Tifa is her ability to courageously confront and defeat monsters.

7. Clive Rosfield

In the game Final Fantasy 16, players have the opportunity to follow the journey of Clive Rosfield, starting from his teenage years at 15 and continuing until he reaches the age of 33.

Despite being the eldest child, Clive does not inherit his father’s powerful Eikon, Phoenix. Instead, it is passed down to his younger brother, Joshua.

Clive, instead of feeling jealous, committed himself to safeguarding Joshua. Unfortunately, a devastating event involving Ifrit caused them to be separated, leading Clive to believe that Joshua had perished.

Despite his gloomy demeanor, Clive harbors deep affection for his loyal companion Torgal, revealing a softer side beneath his protective brotherly nature.

8. Cecil Harvey

In Final Fantasy 4, the protagonist is Cecil Harvey, who is initially trained as a Dark Knight and instructed to follow the commands of the King of Baron. However, Cecil’s loyalty starts to falter when he realizes that the King’s orders are aimed at harming innocent individuals.

At some point, the protagonist of the game must confront his own actions and inner darkness. This pivotal moment leads him to become a Paladin, creating a lasting impact on players.

Cecil is a relatable and authentic character who grapples with his past and actively works towards personal growth. It is this depth and development that sets him apart as one of the underappreciated heroes in the Final Fantasy series.

9. Balthier

In Final Fantasy 12, Balthier, a sky pirate, stands out as one of the most memorable characters. Despite not being the main protagonist, Balthier leaves a lasting impact on players.

Alongside his partner Fran, he embarks on a journey across Ivalice in his airship, driven by the quest for valuable treasures.

During one of their adventures, Balthier unexpectedly crosses paths with Vaan and becomes entangled in a complex political conflict.

Balthier sees himself as the central figure, taking control of his own destiny, which is depicted through his determination to leave his past behind.

However, he soon realizes that confronting his past is necessary for personal growth and progress.

10. Celes Chere

The character Celes Chere in Final Fantasy 6 starts out as a high-ranking officer in the Gestahlian Empire. Through the infusion of magic, she gains the ability to become a powerful Magitek Knight.

However, Celes ultimately betrays the empire and decides to align herself with the resistance group known as the Returners.

Throughout the game, Celes starts off as distant and reserved but gradually forms close bonds with Locke and Terra.

These connections with the party play a crucial role in giving her the strength to persevere during her lowest moments, which greatly appeals to fans of the game.

11. Lightning

While the overall reception for Final Fantasy 13 was varied, the main character, Lightning, is widely regarded as one of the top characters in the franchise. Lightning initially comes across as distant and focused only on her perceived failure to safeguard her sister, Serah.

In the game, Lightning experiences personal growth and development when she encounters Hope Estheim and decides to join forces with him to become stronger.

This partnership allows Lightning to become more expressive and open with her feelings, as she begins to see Hope as a beloved younger sibling.

Lightning’s journey showcases her exceptional strength, both in terms of physical prowess and emotional resilience, making her character development a standout aspect of the game.

12. Freya Crescent

The best characters in Final Fantasy include Freya Crescent, who belongs to the Burmecian race. This race is known for their resemblance to anthropomorphic rats. Freya first encounters the protagonist, Zidane, during the Festival of the Hunt in Lindblum.

As a dragoon, Freya possesses the ability to leap high into the air and strike her adversaries with her spear. She proudly serves in Burmecia’s military and is dedicated to safeguarding her people. However, she has not been able to search for her lover, Sir Fratley, for several years.

Despite feeling sorrowful over Sir Fratley’s amnesia and being deeply affected by the destruction of Burmecia, Freya remains determined and continues to support Zidane’s group in their battle against Queen Brahne and Kuja, showcasing her unwavering strength and loyalty.

13. Laguna Loire

The character Laguna Loire is initially introduced in Final Fantasy 8 through flashbacks that take place in Squall’s dreams. Despite dreaming of becoming a writer, Laguna actually served as a soldier in Galbadia.

At some point during a mission, he suffered an injury and was discovered alone by Raine, whom he eventually developed romantic feelings for. Sadly, Raine meets her untimely demise after delivering Laguna’s child, a revelation that Laguna was completely unaware of.

The flashback sections featuring Laguna are captivating in terms of storytelling, and his optimistic demeanor stands in stark contrast to Squall in the present timeline. Although he may not have a significant amount of screen time, Laguna is undeniably one of the most captivating characters in the game.

14. Bartz Klauser

Bartz Klauser, one of the standout characters in Final Fantasy 5, is an adventurous soul who is always accompanied by his faithful chocobo, Boko. During his journey across the vast land, Bartz stumbles upon a fallen meteorite and encounters two other intriguing individugals: Lenna Charlotte Tycoon and Galuf Halm Baldesion.

Together, they form an alliance and embark on a grand quest, with Bartz assuming the role of a valiant Warrior of Light. Despite enduring the loss of his parents at a tender age, Bartz maintains a cheerful demeanor and possesses an optimistic outlook as he explores the captivating world around him.

The endearing bond between Bartz and his beloved chocobo, Boko, further highlights his compassionate nature.

15. Zack Fair

The popularity of Zack Fair, a character from Final Fantasy 7, has seemingly increased in recent years. However, the truth is that many fans have always adored Zack, but they didn’t have the means to express their love for him before the advent of the internet.

Zack Fair, the beloved protagonist of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, captured the affection of fans worldwide with his positive outlook, amiable demeanor, and unyielding determination to create a brighter future. Considered a true hero, he embodies the qualities we often associate with the best characters in the Final Fantasy series.

16. Cidolfus Orlandeau

It is essential to include a version of Cid in this list, but determining the best Cid among them is subjective. Final Fantasy 7’s Cid, Final Fantasy 14’s Cid, and Final Fantasy 9’s Cid all have their arguments, but my preference for the top Cid character goes to a unique and unconventional iteration of this recurring character.

One notable aspect of Final Fantasy Tactics is that its character Cidolfus Orlandeau is portrayed as a warrior, which sets him apart from other versions of Cid who are typically engineers, mentors, or political leaders.

However, what truly distinguishes Orlandeau is his immense power. In terms of both lore and in-game abilities, he is considered one of the most overpowered characters in Final Fantasy Tactics. In fact, his extraordinary strength can be seen as a unique homage to the entire Cid “lineage.”
