Best Viking Games in 2024
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla

Viking Games have always been popular for their rich historical settings, and the Assassin’s Creed series is no exception. In the latest installment, Valhalla, players get to embody the role of Eivor, the leader of a Viking clan.
What’s interesting is that players have the option to play as either a male or female warrior. Throughout the game, players will embark on a journey that takes them from the snowy landscapes of Norway to the rugged lands of England.
Similar to previous modern Assassin’s Creed games, Valhalla is an expansive RPG with a multitude of quests to complete. With its vast amount of content, Valhalla definitely stands out as one of the best video games based on Norse mythology.
For those looking for a touch of the supernatural, the Dawn of Ragnarök DLC is worth considering. This DLC introduces Odin’s powers, adding an extra layer of magic to the overall gaming experience.
Valheim

Despite still being in the Early Access phase, Valheim is impressively polished. Its quality is so exceptional that it has earned a place on our curated list of top survival games. The game is set in a Nordic purgatory, as indicated by its title.
Upon starting, players are immersed in a randomly generated sandbox world. The objective is simple: hunt, construct, explore, and survive. The ultimate goal is to prove one’s worthiness to enter Valhalla.
Players have the option to enjoy Valheim individually or team up with a maximum of nine friends. Regardless of the chosen mode, hours of enjoyable gameplay await. Whether seeking solo challenges or cooperative adventures, Valheim stands as one of the finest Norse mythology games available for PC.
God of War

Viking Games have gained popularity, with one of the standout titles being God of War. This game, which was previously exclusive to PlayStation, has received immense acclaim. The latest installment takes a significant departure from its Greek roots as the protagonist, Kratos, now resides in the realm of Nordic gods.
God of War falls under the action-adventure genre, placing a strong emphasis on both combat and exploration. Players have the opportunity to engage in intense hand-to-hand battles, utilizing the powerful Leviathan Axe, while also uncovering additional weapons and special abilities as they progress through the game.
This immersive experience has solidified God of War as a leading contender among Norse mythology video games in the market.
For Honor

It’s important to clarify right away that For Honor is not a typical Viking game for PC. Although it features fierce Norsemen as one of the playable options, this action-fighting game by Ubisoft is actually set in medieval times.
The gameplay revolves around intense close-quarter battles and offers a highly strategic combat system. It caters to both solo players who can enjoy an exciting story campaign and those who prefer online multiplayer modes with PvP encounters.
If you’re seeking a blend of strategic gameplay and the thrill of berserker rage, For Honor might be the perfect choice for you.
Crusader Kings III

Crusader Kings 3 is a game that may not directly fall under the category of Norse mythology video games, but it does offer players the option to play as the people of the North.
This grand strategy RPG is set in the Middle Ages and allows players to take on the role of a dynasty of rulers, leading them to glory throughout a campaign that spans generations.
For those who enjoy this type of gameplay and are craving more content centered around Norsemen, there is good news.
Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice

In Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, the protagonist’s journey is intertwined with Norse tales, even though she doesn’t come from the far North. This game is not just about combat; it also offers a captivating psychological thriller experience.
While fighting is an important part of the gameplay, its core revolves around a heroine who suffers from psychosis. She constantly hears voices in her head that challenge her decisions, and struggles to distinguish reality from her delusions. This unique experience makes Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice one of the top Norse mythology video games available.
The Banner Saga Trilogy

Viking-themed video games don’t always have to be action-packed. The Banner Saga series, which includes The Banner Saga 2 and The Banner Saga 3, is a prime example of this. These games are tactical role-playing games that prioritize storytelling.
The choices players make throughout the game can have a lasting impact on the storyline, with some decisions carrying over to future installments. Alongside the turn-based combat and engaging narrative, the beautifully hand-drawn art style has received high praise from both players and critics.
The Banner Saga trilogy is a must-play for those seeking a slower and more immersive gaming experience. Each game in the series deserves recognition as one of the top Norse mythology games available.
Jotun: Valhalla Edition

If you’re interested in playing indie games that explore Scandinavian mythology, then you should definitely give Jotun: Valhalla Edition a try. This game is an action-adventure title with stunning hand-drawn visuals.
You’ll assume the role of Thora, a warrior who faced an inglorious death and must now prove herself worthy of entering Valhalla. Throughout the game, Thora will travel through different realms and face off against powerful elemental creatures.
Each victory will unlock new areas and earn the admiration of the gods. As the player, your goal is to help Thora defeat all the bosses and achieve eternal glory.
Tribes of Midgard

Prepare for battle as the forces of Ragnarok descend upon Tribes of Midgard! In this Viking game, your mission is to protect the sacred tree, Yggdrasil, from impending danger inspired by Norse mythology.
The best part? You don’t have to face this challenge alone. Join forces with up to 9 other players and embark on an epic journey together. Tribes of Midgard offers a fast-paced survival RPG experience, where you’ll spend countless hours exploring a world that is generated procedurally.
Collect valuable materials to craft and enhance your weapons and armor, ensuring you have the best tools for combat. Speaking of combat, it plays a significant role in this game, so be prepared for intense battles. Choose your preferred mode of play – either the story-driven Saga or the more open Survival mode – and dive into the immersive world of Tribes of Midgard.
Northgard

Moving on to our selection of top Viking video games, one title that stands out is Northgard. This game falls under the category of a classic real-time strategy (RTS) game, where players are tasked with assisting a Norse clan in exploring and conquering a newly discovered land.
However, venturing into these unfamiliar and harsh territories is not an easy feat, as you will encounter various challenges such as undead warriors and fierce dire wolves along the way. What makes Northgard particularly intriguing is its offering of both an engaging single-player campaign and the option to play cooperatively with friends.
This cooperative gameplay is perfect for those who enjoy Norse mythology games and real-time strategies, providing an enjoyable experience for all involved.
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

When exploring the world of gaming influenced by Norse mythology, it is important to mention the fifth installment of The Elder Scrolls series. Although not directly based on this mythology, it draws inspiration from the stories of the people from the North.
In Skyrim, players have the freedom to forge their own path. Whether they choose to become infamous outlaws, engage in epic battles against dragons, or explore ancient ruins, the choice is theirs. So, equip your reliable axe, wear your horned helmet, and get ready to embark on an unforgettable adventure through the snowy lands.
Smite

Viking Games: Smite is an exciting fantasy game that explores the possibility of gods from different pantheons engaging in epic battles. Among the various pantheons, the Norse gods, with popular characters like Loki and Thor, are extensively represented.
Additionally, lesser-known mythological heroes such as Ullr and Ratatoskr are also included in the game. The game stays true to the lore of these Norse gods, making it enjoyable for players to delve into their designs and abilities. It offers a refreshing experience when players want to switch characters and avoid monotony.
Smite, a popular MOBA game released in 2014, continues to receive support from its developer Hi-Rez. What sets Smite apart from its competitors is its unique third-person perspective, offering players a more immersive gaming experience compared to the traditional top-down angle.
The game features intense and thrilling combat, along with various game modes that offer a fresh take on the usual lane matchups found in other MOBAs like Dota 2 or League of Legends. If you’re looking for a MOBA with a Norse theme and want a break from more complex games, Smite is worth considering.
Expeditions: Viking

In today’s gaming landscape dominated by battle royale games, it’s rare to find classic party-based RPGs. However, the genre is experiencing a resurgence, thanks to recent success stories such as Divinity: Original Sin, Pillars of Eternity, and Expeditions: Viking.
Expeditions: Viking is a Viking game that focuses on storytelling and a party-based RPG experience, prioritizing historical accuracy over fantasy elements. The game is set in 790 AD and puts players in the role of a Norse chieftain, tasked with leading a conquest across the shores of Britannia.
Players must gather their own clan, accumulate wealth, and survive in a challenging new world. Throughout their journey, players will need to manage their clan’s campsite, explore towns for resources and new quests, and engage in turn-based combat reminiscent of Divinity: Original Sin.
In this RPG, you have the freedom to decide whether your clan will conquer their new territory through raids and battles, or opt for trade and diplomacy. The game revolves around making choices, starting from the character creation screen.
You will face tough decisions such as choosing skills, allocating resources efficiently, and determining who you can truly rely on as the game progresses. If you’re in search of a captivating historical RPG, this is one of the top Viking games to immerse yourself in.
Bad North

Bad North is a captivating strategy game that gained immense popularity due to its charming visuals and captivating gameplay. It is a real-time tactics game that is simple to begin with but challenging to become proficient at.
This is why it stands out as one of our top games from 2018. Each level of the game is set on a small secluded island, with minimalistic design, and it requires players to strategically utilize their defending units to make the most of the island’s randomly generated layout. Despite its clean and straightforward appearance, the game is far from easy.
The captivating artistic design of the medieval era is enhanced by its delightful sound effects and soundtrack. Despite its relaxed atmosphere, Bad North presents challenging obstacles that are sure to engage players. If you find yourself overwhelmed by intricate real-time strategy menus, this Norse game provides a refreshing departure from such complications.
Volgarr the Viking

Bringing back nostalgic memories, Volgarr the Viking is an incredibly challenging side-scrolling game with a visually stunning 16-bit pixel art style. It draws inspiration from classic series like Castlevania, where the main objective is to overcome obstacles and reach the end of each level, despite the relentless attacks from enemies and the treacherous environment.
With multiple possible endings and a total of seven unique worlds to navigate, this game offers a great deal of content and will definitely not be a walk in the park.
Fortunately, the game I am referring to in this text is not excessively long, but it is definitely worth playing if you are looking for a challenging experience. Unlike other games that provide constant guidance, this game will not hold your hand and requires you to figure things out on your own.
In fact, it is so difficult that it makes the famously challenging Dark Souls game seem easy in comparison. If you are able to handle a high level of difficulty and enjoy the thrill of overcoming challenges, then Volgarr the Viking.
Viking Squad

Viking Squad stands out as a highly engaging game in the pack, offering a co-operative side-scrolling brawler experience. It cleverly combines Norse mythology with the entertaining gameplay style of Castle Crashers. The result is an incredibly enjoyable game that lives up to its exciting premise.
The standout aspect of Viking Squad is its roguelite progression mechanics, which require you to use your earned loot to enhance your character’s skills and equipment after successfully completing a level. This game fully embraces the chaotic nature of the genre and presents a visually appealing art style that allows players to easily follow the action even in challenging situations.
Civilization VI

While it may seem unlikely, Civilization VI actually provides a scenario where players can immerse themselves in the world of Vikings. In this particular scenario, you will assume the role of Vikings and embark on a mission to shape the destiny of Europe. The game developers themselves acknowledge that this scenario is meticulously crafted, making it a must-try for any Viking enthusiast.
The main game of Civilization VI offers an impressive level of detail. Players have the opportunity to choose a culture and leader from history, and their objective is to transform them into the most influential civilization in the world.
Civilization VI has made significant efforts to enhance the experience of building, expanding, and growing, making it more immersive and enjoyable than ever before. If you haven’t played this game yet, you’re definitely missing out on something special.
The Witcher 3

Although The Witcher 3 and its games are not typically associated with Viking themes, the modding community has created a way for players to experience the game as Geralt the Viking. This modification adds an element of fun and surprisingly complements the gameplay.
The Witcher 3 is undeniably one of the top action and RPG titles, offering a rich world filled with engaging characters and challenging monsters. Whether you choose to be a Witcher or a Viking, there’s no need for a specific reason to enjoy this exceptional game.
Mount & Blade Warband

While Mount and Blade Warband itself may not be categorized as a Viking Game, there is a downloadable content (DLC) available that enables players to immerse themselves in the Viking spirit.
This DLC offers a unique campaign where you can experience the Viking perspective while playing as a group of Vikings in Ireland. The game presents an alternate version of history where the land holds unexpected surprises.
Additionally, players have the opportunity to interact with gods and other mythical creatures who can join their army. The DLC provides a vast gaming experience with a multitude of characters, cities, and battle mechanics, allowing players to truly delve into the Viking world.
Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia

The main objective of Total War Saga: Thrones of Britannia is to give players the opportunity to rewrite history. The game takes place shortly after the year 878 AD, when the King of England successfully repelled a Viking invasion. However, the Vikings and other factions have established settlements throughout the land, and although there is currently peace, a total war is imminent.
Ancestors Legacy

Ancestors Legacy, a Viking-themed game, brings back top-down gameplay. Unlike many similar games in this genre, Ancestors Legacy was released in 2018, with subsequent releases on PS4 in 2019 and Switch in 2020.
This relatively short timeframe allows the game to offer a classic genre experience with modern technology support. The result is a real-time strategy (RTS) game that provides a seamless transition from PC to console, making it one of the best ported games I have come across.
The most impressive aspect of this game is its captivating story. Unlike many games today, it successfully integrates its gameplay objectives into the plot, which is often overlooked. However, the gameplay itself is rather ordinary.
It relies on a basic rock, paper, scissors system with infantry units, similar to Pokémon. Nonetheless, it is a well-developed title, particularly on the PS4 and Xbox. If you’re searching for a realistic Viking adventure, though, this game might not fully satisfy your expectations.
Dead in Vinland

Dead in Vinland stands out for its unique combination of survival management and RPG elements. Despite its “free Facebook game” appearance, the game has received a high percentage of positive reviews on Steam (81%) for good reason.
It is worth noting that Dead in Vinland is a sequel to the previous title “Dead in Bermuda,” but playing the latter is not necessary to enjoy the former. Viking games often have a simple yet well-crafted storyline, and this game is no exception.
However, the standout feature of this game is its gameplay. The combat mechanics are based on a turn-based skill system with RPG elements, similar to the popular game Darkest Dungeon. If you are familiar with Darkest Dungeon, you will have a good idea of what to expect from this game.
If you haven’t played Darkest Dungeon yet, I highly recommend giving it a try. The overall gameplay experience in this Viking game is quite similar to Darkest Dungeon, with a character management system that keeps you on edge throughout the game. It’s a game that may not appeal to everyone, but it’s like Marmite – you either love it or hate it.
Vikings: Wolves of Midgard

When it comes to games inspired by Vikings, top-down action RPGs are the most popular genre. These games often draw inspiration from Dragon Age and Diablo, which is actually a positive aspect. One of the standout Viking games is Vikings – Wolves of Midgard, developed by a Slovak studio.
This game not only brings much-needed credibility to the genre but is also considered one of the best Viking games ever created. When you play Viking Games, you’ll notice that it has a similar feel to Diablo.
The game offers a good character creation system and a fully open world. However, the progression system is quite linear, and its replayability depends on unique features that were ahead of their time.
Viking Games has received a positive rating on Steam and a 66 on Metacritic, which accurately reflects its quality.
Through the Woods

Through the Woods is a thrilling game set in contemporary Norway, but it incorporates mythical creatures inspired by ancient legends and folklore. The game revolves around a brave mother’s quest to find her lost son in the eerie depths of a forest.
As you progress, you will primarily engage in exploration and puzzle-solving activities. However, be cautious as your reliable flashlight not only illuminates the darkness but also attracts the presence of lurking creatures. With its spine-chilling atmosphere and captivating storyline, Through the Woods undoubtedly ranks among the most thrilling Viking games available.
The Lost Vikings 1 & 2

Included in Blizzard’s Arcade Collection, the Viking Games known as The Lost Vikings are 2D puzzle adventures that require players to switch between characters with unique abilities to advance through levels.
The portrayal of Vikings in these games is far from historically accurate; instead, they are exaggerated, comical characters similar to the Three Stooges, designed to appeal to a younger audience.
The idea of Vikings using their shields as hang gliders, as depicted in this game, is highly improbable. Originally released on the Super Nintendo in 1993, The Lost Vikings offers a nostalgic experience for puzzle enthusiasts. Its sequel, Norse by Norsewest, takes the absurdity even further by introducing robots, a werewolf, and a dragon.
Frozenheim

Frozenheim is a new and exciting game that combines elements of city-building, survival, and exploration. Set in a harsh and unforgiving Norse-inspired world, players must establish and manage their own Viking village, while also battling the forces of nature and defending against rival clans.
The game offers a unique blend of gameplay mechanics, allowing players to construct and upgrade their settlement, gather resources, trade with other factions, and engage in intense combat.
With stunning graphics and immersive sound design, Frozenheim provides an immersive and challenging gaming experience that will keep players hooked for hours on end. Whether you enjoy strategic planning, resource management, or epic battles, Frozenheim has something for everyone.
Blood Rage

Blood Rage is a popular board game that combines strategy, combat, and Norse mythology. Set in a mythical Viking era, players take on the roles of different Viking clans, each vying for control and glory during the end of the world, known as Ragnarok.
The objective of the game is to achieve the highest glory points by successfully completing quests, battling opponents, and strategically managing resources. Blood Rage offers a unique gaming experience with its intricate miniatures, stunning artwork, and a wide range of strategic options.
With its immersive theme and intense gameplay, Blood Rage has gained a cult following among both casual and hardcore board game enthusiasts.

With its immersive storyline, breathtaking visuals, and addictive gameplay, Viking: Battle for Asgard offers an unforgettable gaming experience for fans of the Viking era and action-adventure genre.
