Final Fantasy 5 is the fifth installment in the popular Final Fantasy series, developed by Square and released in 1992 for the Super Famicom. This Japanese role-playing game (JRPG) is considered a masterpiece.

It is worth noting that FF5 is the final game in the series to have input from its creator, Hironobu Sakaguchi, and it had a significant impact on the future creators at Square. The game’s story was co-written by Sakaguchi and Yoshinori Kitase, the director of Final Fantasy 6 and the current brand manager for the Final Fantasy series at Square Enix.

The sales of Final Fantasy 5 and Final Fantasy 6 on the original platforms were extremely successful, with millions of units sold.

Final Fantasy 5 Cheats And Secrets

Final Fantasy 5 is a game that follows the typical format of the series, where players control a group of unexpected heroes who are tasked with saving their planet.

The game’s storyline is set in a time period long before the events of the game, where a malevolent sorcerer named Exdeath is imprisoned for his attempt to annihilate the world using the power of the Void, a darkness that poses a threat to existence itself.

The protagonist, a young explorer named Bartz, is unaware that his own father was one of the warriors who previously defeated Exdeath. However, when Bartz agrees to assist Lenna in her search for her missing father, he becomes entangled in an epic adventure to save the world.

When it comes to gameplay, Final Fantasy 5 is widely adored because of its innovative Job system, which was first introduced in Final Fantasy 3.

Unlike the original Job System, players in Final Fantasy 5 have the freedom to combine abilities from different Jobs, resulting in powerful combinations that include both physical and magical skills.

The battles in the game are still turn-based, but they also incorporate the Active-Time Battle (ATB) system from Final Fantasy 4. This means that players must strategically choose the appropriate Jobs and abilities based on the situation at hand.

Final Fantasy 5 Main Characters

Despite its more light-hearted storyline, Final Fantasy 5 still presents a captivating narrative with a diverse and engaging cast of characters. The game begins by introducing the main protagonist, Bartz, and swiftly adds the remaining three members to form the primary adventuring party.

In Final Fantasy 5, the storyline employs the popular narrative device of a protagonist suffering from amnesia. As the game progresses, we gradually uncover the forgotten history of Galuf, one of the party members, who is revealed to have a significant link to a legendary group called the Warriors of Dawn.

These heroes have previously engaged in a fierce confrontation with the game’s main antagonist, Exdeath. Notable characters in FF5 include:

Heroes

  • Bartz: Bartz, the protagonist of Final Fantasy 5, is a laid-back explorer. With limited knowledge about his father, he embarks on a journey across the globe alongside his loyal Chocobo companion, Boko, following the passing of his mother. Unexpectedly, a meeting with a young princess and a meteorite propels Bartz into an unforgettable adventure.
  • Lenna: Princess Lenna, who is next in line to rule the kingdom of Tycoon, embarks on a journey to find her father after he goes missing while investigating the Wind Shrine, home to the Wind Crystal. She teams up with Bartz in order to locate her father and unravel the enigma surrounding the destruction of the Crystals.
  • Galuf: Bartz and Lenna come across an experienced fighter at the location where a meteorite has crashed. This warrior, named Galuf, is suffering from memory loss and cannot recall his origin. However, he is determined to prevent the destruction of the Crystals. As the game progresses, players uncover that Galuf has a significant connection to both Exdeath and Bartz’s father.
  • Faris: Faris, a bold and compassionate ally, is the youthful leader and captain of a limited number of sea-faring ships. Despite her impulsive nature, she forms a strong bond with Lenna and decides to join the party after they attempt to steal her vessel. As the story unfolds, we come to realize that Faris and Lenna share an unusual connection as they are revealed to be long-lost siblings.
  • Krile: Krile, who happens to be Galuf’s granddaughter, possesses exceptional combat skills of her own. After Galuf tragically falls victim to Exdeath, she bravely steps in to fill his place in the party, inheriting all of Galuf’s abilities.

Warriors of Dawn

  • Dorgann: In Final Fantasy 5, Dorgann is portrayed as Bartz’s parent and a part of the Warriors of Dawn. As the story progresses, Dorgann decides to remain in the original world to monitor Exdeath’s actions. During his stay, he forms a family and becomes a father to a son.
  • Kelger: In Galuf’s world, Kelger is the leader of the werewolf tribe and also one of the Warriors of Dawn. Despite the potential danger to himself and his people, he bravely assists the party.
  • Xezat: After the Warriors of Dawn succeed in defeating Exdeath, Xezat steps up to become the ruler of his own kingdom in the Second World. In a selfless act, he sacrifices his own life to eliminate the barrier around Exdeath’s tower. This allows Galuf and his newfound companions to enter the tower and put an end to the wicked sorcerer’s reign once and for all.

Villains

  • Enuo: In the past, a powerful sorcerer tried to utilize the Void to eliminate everything in existence. As a result, he was sealed away in the vast Forest of Moore. However, this act of sealing eventually caused his malevolent energy to corrupt the trees within the forest. Gradually, this wickedness gathered together to form a single, abominable entity that possessed enough strength to materialize itself.
  • Exdeath: Exdeath, a powerful warlock, is the embodiment of Enuo’s evil. Originally a sentient tree, his main goal is to gain control over the Void and eliminate all existence. Although he comes close to achieving his objective, the Warriors of Dawn intervene and contain him within the Forest of Moore. Despite being sealed away, Exdeath continues to work covertly to destroy the Crystals and merge two separate worlds into a single entity.
  • Gilgamesh: Gilgamesh is a skilled swordsman who serves as Exdeath’s right-hand man. He frequently tests the party’s strength but withdraws when faced with defeat. However, as the story progresses, he develops admiration for Bartz and his companions and decides to join forces with them in their mission to conquer Exdeath.

Final Fantasy 5 Cheats & Secrets

Although there are no officially provided cheats for Final Fantasy 5 in the Final Fantasy Anthology and its corresponding versions, players can make use of various Game Shark codes that are available for these games.

Moreover, there are a few hidden secrets and exploits that players can utilize specifically in the PS1 version of Final Fantasy 5.

Defeat Exdeath Without Facing NeoExdeath

If players have a party member who has mastered the Chemist Job in Final Fantasy 5, they will gain access to the powerful !Mix command. By combining a Maiden’s Kiss and a Holy Water, players can create the special item called the “Kiss of Blessing”.

This item has the unique ability to inflict three unblockable status effects on enemies – Berserk, Haste, and Image. Surprisingly, this powerful concoction can also be used on bosses.

If players use the “Kiss of Blessing” on Exdeath during his first form and then defeat him, he will not disappear into the Void like usual.

Instead, he will die like a regular boss. After a few seconds, the ending of FF5 will automatically begin, allowing players to skip the need to fight Exdeath’s final form.

255 Weapon Glitch

The cheat known as the weapon duplication glitch in Final Fantasy 5 is a useful method to obtain multiple copies of a specific weapon quickly. By doing this, players can sell the extra weapons for a generous amount of GP. This cheat was first discovered in the original Super Famicom version of the game but can still be used in the PS1 version included in Final Fantasy Anthology.

To perform this glitch, players need to have both a Thief and a Ninja character in their party. It’s important to note that this glitch only works with weapons that can be thrown using the !Throw command.

To begin, ensure that you encounter an opponent who possesses a weapon or item you wish to steal in Final Fantasy 5. Then, double-check that you do not already possess that particular item or weapon in your collection. If it is not present in your inventory, ensure that the first slot is vacant by replacing the initial item with an empty space.

To utilize the cheats in Final Fantasy 5, start by equipping the Thief’s weapon and then unequipping it. Afterward, move around to trigger an encounter. The Thief character will have the first opportunity to act. Choose the “Item” option and then select “Equip” to equip the Thief’s weapon in their right hand once again.

When the Ninja’s turn arrives, select “!Throw” and throw the empty space in your inventory where the Thief’s weapon was previously located. This action will result in no damage. On the Thief’s following turn, opt for “Steal” to successfully pilfer the enemy’s weapon. As a result, this stolen weapon will now occupy the first slot in your inventory.

To utilize the Final Fantasy 5 cheats, instruct your Ninja character to use !Throw skill to launch the newly acquired weapon at the enemy during their upcoming turn. In case the weapon throw fails to eliminate the enemy, you can resort to traditional methods of defeating them.

Once the battle concludes, examine your inventory to observe that you now possess 55 units of the weapon that the Thief pilfered from the enemy. Interestingly, there are actually a total of 255 units available in your first inventory slot.

Blue Magic

Final Fantasy 5 introduces the Blue Mage as a unique Job class that specializes in utilizing enemy abilities. To acquire these powerful Blue Magic spells, players need to engage in battles with a Blue Mage in their party and have specific enemies use their abilities against them.

For those aiming to fully master the Blue Mage Job, the provided table offers valuable assistance. Moreover, certain Blue Mage abilities prove particularly advantageous during the later stages of FF5, as they can greatly enhance party levels and abilities through repetitive encounters.

One helpful tip for players of Final Fantasy 5 is to use the Mediator/Trainer Job to speed up the learning of Blue Magic spells. By using the !Control ability, players can take control of an enemy’s actions during battle.

This allows them to easily select and cast the Blue Magic spells that the Blue Mage needs to learn. Having both a Blue Mage and a Mediator in your party can greatly simplify the process of learning all the Blue Magic spells.
